Thoran is a usually dry dish that is served as a side dish with rice in Kerala. It’s ingredients can range from from cabbage to beans to carrots to beets, For this green papaya version papaya is finely chopped and cooked with coconut and cumin and seasoned with mustard and red chillies.
Ingredients
Green papaya , chopped – 2 cups
grated coconut – 1/2 cup
green chillies – 2 to 3
curry leaves – a handfull
cumin seeds – 1/4 tspn
dry red chillies – 2 to 3
urad dal – 1 tspn
mustard seeds – 1 tspn
heat oil in a pan. Add urad dal, dry red chillies and mustard seeds. When the mustard seeds start crackling, add green papaya, green chillies and curry leaves and cook for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, grind the coconut and cumin seeds to a coarse paste. When the papaya is cooked, add the coconut paste and cook for 3-4 minutes. Papaya thoran is ready to be served.
