Green Peas Curry Kerala Style

Ingredients

Dry green peas – 1 cup ,washed and soaked for 6-8 hours.

Onion – 1 small sized, finely sliced

Chopped Tomato – 1 medium

ginger – 1″ piece , grated or finely chopped

Curry leaves – 8 to 10

Green chillies – 3 to 4, adjust as per taste

fennel seeds – 1 tsp

dry red chillies – 2 to 3

Grated coconut – ½ cup

coriander powder – 1 tsp

Turmeric powder – ½ Tsp

For tempering :

Mustard Seeds – 1 Teaspoon

½ of one small onion, finely sliced or 2 to 3 shallots

Curry leaves – 4 to 6

Directions

Add the peas to a pressure a cooker with enough water (about 1½ cups water ) Add onion , tomato, ginger , curry leaves , green chillies and salt and pressure cook till the green peas are cooked well( 2-3 whistles, approx:).

In another pan heat 1 tsp oil. Add fennel seeds, dry red chillies and Grated coconut.Roast for about 4 to 5 minutes on a medium flame . Transfer the roasted coconut to blender and coarsely grind together. Add in the prepared coconut paste to the green peas . Add coriander powder, Turmeric powder and add water as per gravy required . Combine well and let it simmer for 8 to 10 minutes.

Heat 2 to 3 tbsp oil in another pan.Add Mustard Seeds . Let mustard seeds splutter . Add chopped onion or shallots. fry till onions turn light brown. Pour the tempering mix over the green peas curry and mix well. Check the seasoning , add salt as required .

Green peas curry is ready. Serve warm with appam, idiyappam, chappathi etc.
