Dal Kofta Curry

Dal Kofta Curry is made with lentil dumplings simmered in a spiced yogurt gravy.
Ingredients:
chana dal – 1 and 1/2 cup
onion – 2 medium , sliced
garlic cloves – 4 to 5
ginger – 1 inch piece
green chillies – 3 to 4 , chopped
cilantro – 1.2 cup , chopped
corn-starch – 1 tbsp
bread-crumbs- 1/3 cup
yogurt – – 1/ 2 cup ( for vegan version substitute with tomato puree)
crushed coriander seeds – 1 tsp
cumin seeds – 2 tsp
black pepper powder 2 tsp
cumin powder – 1/2 tsp
coriander powder – 1 tbsp
red chilli powder – 1 tsp
garam masala – 1 tsp
black cardamom, – 1
green cardamom – 2 to 3
bay leaf – 1

Cook the dal with with garlic, ginger and cumin seeds. Drain excess water and blend it with corn-starch and bread-crumbs with little water if necessary to sticky dough like mixture. Transfer this dal mix to a bowl and add green chillies,cilantro, coriander seeds, black pepper and cumin powder. Mix everything well And make golf size ball out of it.
Heat 2 tbsp oil and fry the onions till they turn brown. Drain and grind together with yogurt and keep aside.
Shallow fry the koftas till they are brown.
To make the gravy – heat 2- 3 tbsp and add cumin seeds, black cardamom, green cardamom, bay leaf and the onion- yogurt mix and cook for 5 – 6 minutes. Add water as per gravy required and add the koftas. Simmer for 7 – 10. Garnish with cilantro. Dal kofta curry is ready.
